Chefs Move to Schools

The School Nutrition Association (SNA) and the Chefs Move to Schools program—part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Initiative—recently partnered to support SNA member schools’ efforts to promote healthy school environments.

The Chefs Move program pairs chefs with schools in their communities to collaboratively educate kids about food and proper nutrition. According to the Chefs Move! website (www.chefsmovetoschools.org), “Chefs use their culinary creativity and knowledge to engage students through cooking demonstrations, school gardens and other activities that focus on fruits and vegetables, whole grains, proteins and the importance of a balanced diet. Chefs partner with employees who work in K–12 school meal operations, administrators and teachers to help improve the way children interact with food, from the cafeteria to the classroom.”

Do you know a chef in your community who might be a good fit for this program? The website makes it easy to pair chefs and schools interested in working together. Chefs and schools can sign up for the program; access training, recipes and resources; and learn how chefs and schools across the country are partnering to create healthier school environments.
