Whether they are professional athletes or recreational exercisers, the health of a person’s mitochondria is foundational to exercise performance and healthy aging. Over the past few years, there has been a huge uptick in the number of peer-reviewed publications exploring the vast role of mitochondrial health and mitochondrial decline in all aspects of aging and health.
Research identifying nutrition strategies to optimize the health and function of the mitochondria continues to grow, and key nutrients, including Urolithin A, NMN, and Co-Q10, are being identified as potential agents to improve mitochondrial health and impact athletic performance and recovery.
Such strategies can be used to improve muscular strength and performance in a variety of population settings, from professional athletes to aging populations trying to preserve muscle health.
Fitness professionals play a key role in helping people work to maximize exercise performance through their exercise programs. In addition to physical training, nutrition strategies may be a part of their recommendations.
