The Key to a Prolific Career

Gain knowledge and inspiration at the 2019 IDEA World Convention in Anaheim, June 26-30.

Soccer great Pelé once said, “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and, most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” This concept forms the foundation of everything you will experience at the 2019 IDEA® World Convention in Anaheim, June 26–30. IDEA World is where thousands of fitness, nutrition and wellness professionals and business owners from across the globe converge to learn from each other how to become more effective as personal trainers, group fitness instructors, behavior change agents and business leaders.

“IDEA World hosts the best fitness professionals in the world, where everyone shares their newest and most impacting ideas,” says longtime IDEA presenter Len Kravitz, PhD, coordinator of exercise science at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. “It is the optimal learning environment for fitness professionals.”

Kravitz will join the lineup of more than 225 industry experts whose mission will be to share their hard-earned lessons and success secrets with IDEA World attendees this summer.

Live Your Life Purpose

A top reason pros attend IDEA World is to turn purpose into a prolific career. Number-one best-selling author and creator of Functional Life Coaching, Mastin Kipp, will kick off the event during the Opening Ceremonies with a passion-packed keynote on what it takes to live a life of power and purpose. Named one of Oprah’s “100 awakened leaders who use their voice and talent to elevate humanity,” Kipp has applied his experience and expertise to help more than 2 million people worldwide.

Jay Blahnik

The ceremonies will also feature industry icon Jay Blahnik as he receives the IDEA Jack LaLanne Award, presented by Elaine LaLanne. Blahnik is a veteran IDEA presenter, recipient of the 1996 IDEA Fitness Instructor of the Year Award, and current director of fitness and health technologies at Apple.

“I have spent my life working in the health and fitness industry because it is my passion,” Blahnik says. “To be receiving such a prestigious award from IDEA for doing the work that I love is truly an honor of a lifetime and incredibly humbling. It inspires me to keep doing whatever I can to help inspire more people to fitness!”

Victoria Arlen

At age 11, Victoria Arlen developed two rare conditions that robbed her of the ability to move, speak or eat on her own. She spent 4 years in a vegetative state but, through years of intensive training, went on to become a record-breaking Paralympic gold-medal swimmer. She now works as an on-air host for ESPN and was recently a semifinalist on Dancing With the Stars. Arlen will be on-hand to receive this year’s IDEA Fitness Inspiration Award.

Empowering Education for Everyone

With more than 330 workshops, lectures and workouts on topics ranging from research and program design to new group fitness trends, mind-body offerings, and everything related to business and marketing, there will be plenty of education to sink your teeth into. Here’s some of what you can learn this year.

LEARN THE LATEST IN RESEARCH

Len Kravitz

Health, fitness and nutrition research is constantly evolving. Thankfully, you have access to experts who analyze the latest findings and disseminate them in useful and practical ways. Len Kravitz will do that in “The Female Training Advantage 2019,” a session featuring “new programming ideas for cardiovascular conditioning and resistance training.” He plans to send attendees away with cutting-edge, evidence-based findings on highly effective training techniques for women. (This session is part of the ACE Mover Academy—see below.)

DESIGN MORE EFFECTIVE PROGRAMS

“We all struggle to find more time and more resources when training clients,” says presenter Lee Burton, PhD, a co-founder of Functional Movement Systems. “The key is to be as resourceful as possible, no matter if you are talking about time or equipment.”

Burton’s session, “How to Maximize Your Training With Precision and Purpose,” will send you home with laser-focused program design plans that work.

“The goal is to make you think a little differently about how you go about designing workouts,” he says. “Don’t just take a stab or guess at what will help clients the most; there are ways to figure it out and know what the next step should be.”

UPGRADE YOUR GROUP CLASSES

After teaching barre for nearly a decade, Tricia Madden, fitness instructor and co-creator of Barre Above®, wanted to develop a systematized format for leading classes that would be both safe and effective. She will share that system during the session “Barre, Bands and Beats.”

“This session will provide a systematic approach to incorporating tubing and musicality so your barre class can not only stack up to the competitors in your facilities but be the class the studio and club attendees are talking about,” says Madden.

She adds that incorporating tubing into barre workouts is an easy and inexpensive way to change the challenge and upgrade the experience for participants. Madden will explain how she uses tubes and what you can do to develop a social club atmosphere in your class.

DISCOVER NEW MIND-BODY CHALLENGES

Fitness educator Abbie Appel has two loves: Pilates and the stability ball. It seemed only natural to fuse those loves in a new class format, “Pilates on a Ball.”

“Because many of the principles necessary to working with a stability ball—concentration, control and center—are paramount to Pilates, the stability ball and Pilates are perfectly suited for each other,” Appel explains. She says the unstable nature of the ball means that clients need to truly concentrate on proper form and alignment. The focus leads to better movement—and less risk of falling off the ball.

“Almost all of the movements can be done in a traditional Pilates class, Pilates fusion, muscle conditioning classes or one-on-one,” she says. “This session is for anyone who wants to move better and needs a few new ideas on how to re-energize their classes.”

BOOST SOCIAL MEDIA AND MARKETING

IDEA WOrld Business Technology and Research

“Studies show that 75% of people now find their instructors online, instead of randomly walking into brick-and-mortar studios and inquiring,” says Sadie Nardini, creator of Core Strength Vinyasa Yoga® and The Yoga Shred®. “Those who are not using their social media optimally are missing out on a huge potential client base.”

Nardini plans to give attendees a crash course in upgrading their social media presence, which she says will result in more clarity and comfort and, ultimately, more money.

“I’ll give you a full ‘How to Rock Your Social Media’ blueprint for exactly how to maximize the top two social media platforms you’ll want to be on to fully do what you were born to do!”

Behavior Change Starts Here

The IDEA World Nutrition and Behavior Change Summit was founded on the notion that while information is important, it’s more valuable when clients can apply it to their lives. Now in its 4th year, the Summit has become one of the most popular segments of IDEA World, with 2 full days of education and experiences featuring top nutrition and behavior change experts.

John Berardi

Precision Nutrition’s John Berardi, PhD, will emcee this exclusive event, and there are many compelling reasons to make sure it’s on your agenda this year. Here are a few:

“We’ve all worked with clients who seem motivated but fail to meet their goals,” says Monica Reinagel, MS, LD/N, who founded Nutrition Over Easy. “In my experience, the lack of information is rarely the problem.” In her session, “Bridging the Gap Between Good Intentions and Meaningful Nutrition Change,” the “Nutrition Diva” will serve up the inside scoop on real roadblocks that prevent change.

“As coaches, it’s not enough to give someone the information; we have to help them identify and overcome the barriers that are keeping them from acting on their good intentions,” Reinagel says. “Those barriers may be logistical, cultural, psychological, emotional [or] financial.”

Michelle Alencar, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology-Fitness at California State University, Long Beach, believes behavior change is enhanced by what she calls mobile health (mHealth)—or telehealth.

“While fitness applications may be hot now, the future for mHealth lies in telehealth, or remote monitoring and virtual consultations,” says the professor. “Never before have we been able to truly have connected care [linking] professionals from all angles of health, and telehealth provides the solution.”

Alencar will get attendees up to speed on this latest innovation and how it offers fit pros an opportunity to upgrade their services. “We will dive into the future of telehealth and how fitness and wellness pros can stay ahead of the curve,” she says. “Fortunately, telehealth offers numerous perks to our industry, which at first can be scary but will ultimately deliver outcomes, [improve] client sustainability and facilitate connected, value-based care.”

Reinagel and Alencar will be joined by a robust lineup of presenters speaking on topics such as coaching, new nutrition research, inflammation, neuroscience and more.

THE FORMULA FOR CAREER SUCCESS

IDEA World Events at a Glance

If you struggle to find ways to stand out in the crowd, want to become a more effective leader or need strategies to make more money, then the IDEA Success Academy is for you. Featuring a faculty of top entrepreneurs and industry go-getters, the Academy is where you’ll learn what it takes to create a career that thrives.

One way to succeed is to understand the mistakes of your peers, says Kendra Bylsma, owner and personal trainer at Allegro Coaching.

“As a fitness professional, I have had plenty of failures along the way, including failed business partners, facilities that tanked, bad hires and poor financial decisions,” she admits. In the session “Squash Your Fears and Use Setbacks as Comebacks,” Bylsma will discuss those failures and what she did to overcome them.

“I’ll also share tangible strategies on how to open your first facility, hire great team members, take calculated financial risks, expand revenue streams and stay focused on the most important thing—your vision for the future.”

Do you ask yourself if you’ve reached your full potential in your personal and professional lives? You’re not alone. Longtime fitness presenter Greg Sellar found himself wondering the same thing until he realized the question was preventing him from getting more out of life. He’ll show you how he shifted his thoughts and began living the life he’d always wanted.

“I’ll be working through my 3-M Complex—Mindset, Motivation and Momentum—in my session ‘Hack the Status Quo,’” says Sellar. “[It will give you] the ability to recognize the mindset you’re in and how it’s contributing to your external behaviors; the reasoning to replace motivation as often useless short-term faux-happiness with solid positive action; and the fortitude to keep things going despite falling off the wagon from time to time.”

The Success Academy will also present sessions on leadership, brand building, industry trends and more.

The presenters are always amazing and have lots of good info to share, but I also learn plenty from the other attendees.
